Natural Hair Care for Babies & Toddlers

Last night I visited my friend and his family which includes a little afro haired princess. We started talking about hair and what they could do with their infant daughter's hair. Even though this cutie is only a few months old she has a full head of hair which she was wearing in a cute 'fro. So talking to them I realized that I have no knowledge (and no blogpost!) on caring for babies with kinks and curls! So this is for all the new parents and parents to be of curly babies. And of course, for the beautiful baby girl that inspired this post. :)

So I headed to my trusted source of info YouTube and of course I found some videos. Most of them weren't very good though. I think it's just easier to find vids for bigger kids and adults.

I think it's great to start good hair care routines as soon as the hair has some length as the child gets used to caring for his or her hair from the get go and will see it as something natural and just a part of life.

As always moisture is the key, make sure you work with damp or wet hair when you are detangling or combing. And if you have a baby it's even more important to make sure to use natural products, preferably organic ones. Lock in the moisture with some oil or a shea butter mixture: natural and moisturizing.

And the key when doing babies & toddlers hair is to distract them long enough that you can do their hair. A tip is to have a box of toys that only comes out when it's hair care time. This way these toys are special and very exciting because your child doesn't see them every day. Make sure to update the toys in that box regularly and according to age.

Of course the hair care companies have product lines for curly babies, of course they aren't sold at your regular store in Scandinavia, but you can get them online. Like always read the label and know what you are putting in your child's hair!

I think you can use adult products on your child's hair as long as they are natural products. I would recommend trying Afrocenchix, Rococochichi's Whipped Butters or Darcy's Botanicals that natural products and can be shipped from the UK internationally.
